MobileCom eXpress

The Western DataCom MobileCom eXpress cellular modem is the next evolution in cellular data technology. Utilizing 3G technology, the MobileCom XE is available in EV-DO (1x Evolution-Data Optimized) or HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) versions, providing a wide range of applications for all major cellular carriers. The MobileCom XE motherboard is capable of holding either a EV-DO or HSDPA PCI Express Minicard from Sierra Wireless. The MobileCom XE provides nationwide service for Sprint, Alltel or Verizon on their EV-DO Revision A networks or on the at&t/Cingular 3G HSDPA network. As well as supporting the latest innovations in 3G technology the MobileCom XE is also backward compatible with existing technologies (1xEV-DO Rel 0, 1xRTT, GSM/GPRS/EDGE and UMTS)

Built on Qualcomm technology using a Sierra Wireless PCI Express Mini Card the MobileCom XE is a future proof design capable of easily adapting to the latest technology with the change of a module. An embedded Freescale PowerQUICC II processor provides enough processing power and intelligence to accommodate up to EV-DO Rev B bandwidths providing unprecedented product life.

Communications is maintained via 10/100 Ethernet using a web based graphical user interface, console communications are also available for configuration and setup (AT Commands) via serial interface. In addition an integrated GPS receiver provides highly accurate location based tracking services over serial RS-232 or TCP/IP. Also capable of providing routing and onboard VPN the MobileCom XE is a leading edge product design that makes the best use of its capabilities.

The MobileCom XE operates using 1xEV-DO or HSDPA cellular data technologies, offering the widest variety of application scenarios in a single card. EV-DO Rev 0 offers data rates up to 2048 Kbps downstream and 153Kbps updstream, where as EV-DO Rev A provides a theoretical maximum of 1.8Mbps updstream and 3.1Mbps downstream. HSDPA offers data rates up to 7.2 Mbps downstream and 2.0 Mbps upstream.

The MobileCom XE was specifically designed for integration into the Cisco 3200 Series rugged chassis using optional thermal plates. These thermal plates provide passive conduction cooling that maintains MIL STD 810F compliance. It also increases the standard operating temperature of the MobileCom XE to -40 to +74C.

The MobileCom XE has two antenna connections one primary and one secondary which provides the option to use receive diversity for increased network coverage. In addition there are two serial RS-232 interfaces that are switchable between console access to the modem and GPS output. There is also a single antenna connection for GPS all of which utilize the same interface connectors as the Cisco 3200 Rugged Enclosure (RPTNC).

The integrated GPS receiver is located on the bottom side of the printed circuit board and provides industry standard NMEA data. Using the latest GSC3 SiRF chipset this ultra-high sensitivity GPS receiver acquires position faster, consumes 10% less power and has been designed to operate in areas of dense foliage or urban environments with operation capable indoors down to -159dBm. Output is available on a serial RS-232 interface or via Ethernet and is compatible with most GPS software applications utilizing the NMEA data format.

Due to the wide range of applications and installations Western DataCom does not provide cellular or GPS antennas as a standard product offering but we do recommend preferred vendors. In addition for applications that are capable of using a magnetic mount antenna Western DataCom sells a high quality, weather resistant antenna that comes standard with a 7 foot cable terminated with a RPTNC connector for direct connection to the MAR
